The Potentino Ceiling Project

January 30, 2017

I am currently working on a ceiling painting commission for Castello di Potentino in Tuscany, Italy. The first known documentation of Castello di Potentino dates to 1042, but from evidence nearby, the castle likely has Etruscan roots.

My canvas is the castle's ten-meter vaulted dining room ceiling:

The painting is based on the famous cosmological paintings throughout Italy, using a specific date and time to orient the stars and paint within the constellations and references to traditions in mythology. In my planning, I work to distill the rich history and gorgeous artwork of this region and country which reaches back three millennia, while still making something fresh that speaks today.
